VIII Tesimarató de la Facultat de Química

El proper dimarts 25 de novembre tindrà lloc la setena edició de la Tesimarató de la Facultat de Química, organitzada en el marc de la festivitat de Sant Albert per la Comissió de Dinamització Lingüística del centre. Es tracta d’una jornada adreçada a joves investigadors en la que els doctorands de la Facultat exposen en intervencions molt breus, de 4 minuts, el tema i els objectius del seu treball de tesi doctoral en català. Aquesta iniciativa vol fomentar i promoure la comunicació científica entre els joves investigadors en un format divulgatiu i dinàmic, que alhora permet donar a conèixer la recerca que es fa en els diferents àmbits i programes de doctorat en què participa la Facultat de Química. El llibre de resums derivat d’aquesta jornada es publicarà en accés obert en el Dipòsit Digital de la UB.

La sessió de presentacions tindrà lloc a partir de les 11 h a l’Aula Magna Enric Casassas.

Els diplomes a tots els participants i les distincions es lliuraran el mateix dia a la tarda, també a l’Aula Magna Enric Casassas, a partir de les 17 h, en un acte en el que també se celebrarà la nova promoció de Doctors en Química del curs 2024-2025.

Requisits: estar matriculat durant el curs 2025-2026 en algun programa de doctorat en què participa la Facultat de Química i no haver defensat la tesi abans del 25 de novembre de 2025.

Carme Rovira receives the 2025 National Research Award

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Carme Rovira, ICREA professor in our Section, has been awarded the 2025 National Research Award, one of the most prestigious recognitions for scientific research in Spain.

This award highlights the excellence and impact of Dr. Rovira’s work, as well as the scientific leadership of our Section and University.

Awards of the Specialized Group on Organometallic Chemistry of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry, GEQO 2025

The evaluation committee of the GEQO 2025 awards, has awarded the GEQO Award for Research Excellence to Dr. Laura Rodríguez Raurell for her recent contributions to the use of transition metal compounds in the creation of materials with luminescent properties.

Ranking of leading female researchers

A total of 402 women researchers from the University of Barcelona, including several researchers from our Inorganic Chemistry Section, appear in the ranking published by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) on the 10,000 most outstanding female researchers in Spain.

Among the UB researchers are Rosa Lamuela, from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, Licia Verde, from the Faculty of Physics, and Carme Junqué, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Success of the Second Meeting of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry in Tarragona

From 5 to 7 February 2025, the Second Meeting of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry of the SCQ, RQIO 2025, was held in Tarragona, an event that brought together researchers and experts in the area with the aim of sharing advances and promoting scientific collaboration. The meeting had a wide participation of specialists from various institutions, including several members of our Inorganic Chemistry Section of the University of Barcelona (UB).

During the event, 5 plenary conferences, 28 oral communications, 27 flash presentations and 20 communications in poster format were presented, giving prominence to doctoral students and new researchers. Among the participants from the UB, presentations on new materials, the design of metal complexes with potential in sustainable chemistry stood out.

In addition to the scientific activities, the meeting offered spaces for the exchange of ideas and the generation of future collaborations between research groups.

In the attached photo, most of the meeting attendees and the event organizers, including the members of our Section who have been part of the organization of the event, Dr. Guillem Aromí and Leoní A. Barrios (LabMolDesign), as well as members of the research groups CATHOM, CIC, EE, MATCAT, LabMolDesign, LM2N, MagMol, Matheu Lab, MEC and SuNS.

We thank the organizers Montse Dieguez, María Biosca, Elisenda Mas (Universitat Rovira i Virgili), Mónica H. Pérez-Temprano, Arjan W. Kleij (ICIQ), the Scientific Committee and the Catalan Society of Chemistry (SCQ) and all the participants for the excellent welcome and we hope to continue actively participating in future editions of this key event for the chemical community.

First SCQ Meeting in Organic Chemistry

The poster titled Direct and Stereodivergent Nickel-Catalyzed Aldol-Type Reactions of N-Azidoacetyl Thioimides and Aromatic Acetals, presented by one of our PhD students, Joan Conejos-Jalencas, was awarded at the First Organic Chemistry Meeting organized by the Catalan Society of Chemistry, which took place last week.

A 1 GHz NMR at the University of Barcelona

The most advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instrument in Spain has now been fully operational for over a year at the University of Barcelona. In the attached videos, we explain what NMR is and explore the societal impact of its applications to biomolecules, all in a way accessible to a general audience.

Last Thursday, November 14, a group of doctoral students from the Organic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry programs at the University of Barcelona (UB) visited the plant and laboratories of AGC Pharmaceuticals Europe in Malgrat de Mar (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7263169527771713537/). The students from the PDQO, Albert Ruiz, Eduard Balaguer, and Yisong Wen, presented their thesis projects to the company’s executives and researchers.

After the presentations, a guided tour of the facilities was conducted, where the doctoral students had the to see firsthand the different areas that make up a modern CDMO (Contract Research & Development Organization), such as the development laboratories, the kilolab, the production plant, the micronizer, and the wastewater treatment plant.
