We have just opened a call for two faculty members to join our department as Professor Lector (Assistant Professor). Our team is international, comprising researchers from six different countries, with a balanced mix of senior and junior faculty.

Carme Rovira receives the 2025 National Research Award

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Carme Rovira, ICREA professor in our Section, has been awarded the 2025 National Research Award, one of the most prestigious recognitions for scientific research in Spain.

This award highlights the excellence and impact of Dr. Rovira’s work, as well as the scientific leadership of our Section and University.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Carme on this well-deserved achievement.

First SCQ Meeting in Organic Chemistry

The poster titled Direct and Stereodivergent Nickel-Catalyzed Aldol-Type Reactions of N-Azidoacetyl Thioimides and Aromatic Acetals, presented by one of our PhD students, Joan Conejos-Jalencas, was awarded at the First Organic Chemistry Meeting organized by the Catalan Society of Chemistry, which took place last week.

A 1 GHz NMR at the University of Barcelona

The most advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instrument in Spain has now been fully operational for over a year at the University of Barcelona. In the attached videos, we explain what NMR is and explore the societal impact of its applications to biomolecules, all in a way accessible to a general audience.

Last Thursday, November 14, a group of doctoral students from the Organic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry programs at the University of Barcelona (UB) visited the plant and laboratories of AGC Pharmaceuticals Europe in Malgrat de Mar (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7263169527771713537/). The students from the PDQO, Albert Ruiz, Eduard Balaguer, and Yisong Wen, presented their thesis projects to the company’s executives and researchers.

After the presentations, a guided tour of the facilities was conducted, where the doctoral students had the to see firsthand the different areas that make up a modern CDMO (Contract Research & Development Organization), such as the development laboratories, the kilolab, the production plant, the micronizer, and the wastewater treatment plant.

Dr. Xavier Companyó, new Associate Professor in the Organic Chemistry Section

Last Thursday, November 7th, our colleague, Dr. Xavier Companyó, successfully defended and obtained a permanent position as Associate Professor in our Section through a public competition.

New President of the Academic Committee of the PhD Program

Today, Xavier Verdaguer steps aside as President of the Academic Committee of the PhD Program in Organic Chemistry, and our colleague Anna Maria Costa will take his place. We thank Xavier for his commitment and hard work during the last years and we wish Anna Maria all the best with all our support. Good luck!
