The Department of Inorganic Chemistry was established in 1966 and is the natural descendant of the first Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Barcelona, endowed in 1879 and occupied by Dr. Eugenio Mascareñas Hernández, who introduced the Periodic Table to Spain.Initially, it was part of the Faculty of Sciences of UB and from 1973, when this Faculty split into five new faculties; it became part of the Faculty of Chemistry.

In 1985, in application of the new UB Statutes, it merged with the homonymous Department of the Faculty of Pharmacy, thus giving rise to a single Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Barcelona while located in two different Faculties.

In 2016, there was a reform of the academic structures and administrative organization of the University of Barcelona, which resulted in the creation of the Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry with two departmental sections: Section of Inorganic Chemistry and Section of Organic Chemistry.

Currently, the Inorganic Chemistry Section is involved in teaching various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in both Master’s and Doctoral Programs.Its research activity is structured in teams, which deal with very diverse fields, both experimental and theoretical, specific to Inorganic Chemistry, such as: coordination compounds, organometallic compounds, bioinorganic, supramolecular systems, solid state, catalytic materials, multifunctional materials, nanostructured materials and reaction mechanisms.
